Care for, cut, push back or remove cuticles at home - the best nail instruments

This blog post is about the important tools for caring for your cuticles.

Why do cuticles need to be cared for?

The hands and also the cuticles provide a more beautiful appearance when they are well cared for.

How do you properly care for your cuticles?

To ensure cuticles are removed accurately and without injury, they should always be soaked and gently pushed back before cutting. This ensures a professional and safe manicure.

Soaking cuticles properly – the best methods

  1. After showering or bathing: The warm water automatically softens the cuticles and makes them easier to push back.

  2. Nail bath in lukewarm water: A short hand bath of 5-10 minutes makes the skin supple and makes removal easier.

  3. Nail oil for intensive care: Apply a high-quality nail oil and massage in gently – it softens the cuticles and simultaneously cares for nails and hands.

Tip: Sharp cuticle scissors , cuticle nippers or a special cuticle remover are suitable for removal.

Let’s take a closer look at the most important tools for cuticle removal.

Before you can trim your cuticles, you'll need to shape them using a cuticle pusher. If they're already overhanging, you can go straight to the nail removal tools.

We offer the following cuticle pushers:

Cuticle pusher with narrow handle and wide shape
Cuticle Pusher (Art. No. 13005): The very narrow handle and the wide shape of the pusher at the end are ideal for shaping cuticles with great precision. It is especially suitable for fingernails.

If you're looking for a simple tool to push back cuticles, a simple horse's foot is a good choice.

Plastic cuticle pusher with pointed end
Cuticle pusher, also called a horse's foot (item no. 11063), made of simple plastic with a pointed tip. One disadvantage of this option is that the fine tip can dig too deeply into the cuticle and cause injury. One advantage is that it's inexpensive and can be easily replaced if lost.

You can find more shapes, especially curved ends that adapt to the natural cuticle, here: Cuticle pushers an overview of all shapes .

Remove cuticles or leave them?

After pushing back, there are two options:

  • Few cuticles? Often, pushing them back is enough to maintain a well-groomed appearance.

  • Lots of cuticles? Excess, loose skin can now be safely removed with a cuticle remover.

What types of cuticle removers are there? Which tools are suitable for removing cuticles?

Which tool you need depends on many factors. If you want to remove a lot of cuticles, cuticle scissors or cuticle nippers are more suitable.

If you have little cuticle, a nail knife is suitable:

Cuticle knife one-sided with sharp cutting edge
The cuticle knife (item no. 11028) features a handy handle and a very sharp blade. This is a professional tool that should be used with caution, as it has a very sharp cuticle knife. The advantage is that it allows for precise cuticle cutting, and the knife stays sharp with proper care. The disadvantage is that you can cut yourself.

A slightly different model, which represents a cuticle knife and cuticle pusher in one instrument, is the following tool:

Cuticle knife and cuticle pusher in one

The advantage is that you don't need two instruments. The disadvantage is that it's a bit more awkward to grip, as you have to be careful of sharp cuticle knives.

How do you remove a lot of cuticles?

This is best done using cuticle scissors or cuticle nippers:

Cuticle scissors are suitable for delicate work on the fingernails. A good pair of cuticle scissors has a very pointed tip and very sharp cutting blades.

Cuticle scissors super sharp shape
Super Pointed Nail Scissors (Art. No. 9001) These cuticle scissors allow you to cut precisely along the cuticle. This is made possible by the very pointed tip of the nail scissors. The shape is also known as a "spire" because it tapers very narrowly to the tip.

Cuticle scissors with curved blade
Cuticle scissors with curved shape (Art. No. 9002) are comfortable to hold due to their curved cutting edge and can be used for cuticle removal.

What types of cuticle nippers are available? Which cuticle nippers are suitable for removing cuticles?

You can distinguish between cuticle nippers with a wide blade or short blade.

Cuticle nippers with short blades are used for fingernails. The simple rule here is: the more precisely you want to trim your cuticles, the finer and shorter the blade should be.

In our range you will also find other special shapes

Winkler cuticle nippers (Art. No. 7009)

The downside to cuticle nippers is that they can be difficult to use for some people. Additionally, you have to develop a feel for cutting cuticles.

If you have only worked with cuticle scissors so far, we recommend scissor-shaped cuticle scissors.

Here, too, there are various types of cuticle nippers in scissor form. You can find an overview here: Cuticle nippers in scissor form
